Khayyam

خیام · Astronomer of the Fleeting Moment

c. 1048–1131 CENishapur, Khorasan45 poems

Omar Khayyam was a mathematician and astronomer before he was known for verse. His quatrains — the Rubaiyat — meditate with startling clarity on time, doubt, and seizing the present. In the West, Edward FitzGerald’s translation made him one of the most-read poets of the nineteenth century.

Khayyam led the reform that produced the Jalali calendar — the solar reckoning this site restores. The man who measured the year also wrote its most honest poems about how little of it we have.
