عطار · Guide of the Thirty Birds

c. 1145–1221 CENishapur, Khorasan22 poems

Farid al-Din Attar, an apothecary of Nishapur, wrote the Conference of the Birds — an allegory in which the birds of the world journey to find their king, the Simorgh, only to discover the truth hidden in their own name. Rumi called him the very soul of the mystic way.

The Simorgh — “si morgh,” thirty birds — is Persian literature’s greatest pun and its deepest teaching: what you seek, you already are.
