Ferdowsi · Shahnameh
What this poem says
After the creation of animals came the appearance of man, the key that unlocks every lock of existence. Unlike other living creatures, he carries his head raised high like a tall cypress, speaks well, and puts reason to use; and because he is receptive to intellect and judgment, every beast and wild creature obeys him. Viewed through the window of reason and truth, man proves to be more than a mere name — he is the choicest flower of creation, raised from the union of the unseen, spiritual world and the material one. Know that although man was, in the order of time, the last being to step onto the stage of creation, in God's intent he was its first and highest purpose; so know your worth, O man, and do not imagine that you were made in vain or for idle play. Now that you have recognized your exalted place, consider the outcome of your deeds and choose the best path. It is right to subject the body to hardship in the pursuit of knowledge, for wisdom alone can free you from the snare of misfortune. Look at this turning dome, this swift-wheeling sky, from whose revolutions come joy and sorrow, affliction and cure — a sky that, unlike our bodies, never grows old or worn, never rests for a moment, and never submits to decay, yet within its turning lies hidden the reckoning of our days, our waxing and our waning.
A prose synopsis, not a translation of the verse. Translated from the Persian summary.
