What this poem says

The only way to escape endless sorrow and reach lasting salvation, we are told, is to take refuge in knowledge and faith — to wash the heart with the water of true understanding and heed the command of God's Prophet. That trusted messenger honored his companions and successors, and spoke well of Abu Bakr, Omar, and Othman, each of whom labored for the steadfastness of the faith. But when the discourse turned to Ali's spiritual rank, the Messenger of God stated their bond in clear and decisive words: 'I am like the city of knowledge, and Ali is the gate into that city.' I testify that these words are divine revelation. The wise have compared this world to a stormy sea on which seventy ships drift lost, but among them a single ship stands out, splendid and adorned like a bride — the one carrying the Prophet, Ali, and his household. The wise man knows this sea holds terrible waves and the danger of drowning, and so tells himself that if he must drown, better to drown aboard the ship of God's finest companions, who will support him in both worlds. If these words displease you, know that this is my way and my creed: I was born loving Ali, and I will die loving him. But if your heart is not at peace with this household, the fault lies in your own nature — for to bear malice toward Ali is a sign of corruption in one's lineage, and only someone conceived in impurity, unable to claim a father of his own, would show him enmity; and such a person's place can be nothing but the fire of hell.
