Woman, Life, Freedom is a collective graphic novel directed by Marjane Satrapi, creator of Persepolis. The English edition was published in 2024 by Seven Stories Press; the original French, Femme, Vie, Liberté, appeared in 2023.
More than twenty Iranian and international comics artists, journalists, and scholars — among them Mana and Touka Neyestani — contribute to a book that narrates the 2022 uprising, which erupted after Jina (Mahsa) Amini was killed in the custody of the morality police.
It interweaves full-color comics with narrative essays, striving to depict what state media cannot or will not show: the anger, grief, and hope of a generation that carried the chant “Woman, Life, Freedom” to the world.
The book won the American Library Association’s Alex Award and was named to NPR’s “Books We Love, 2024.” It stands as an artistic, international record of the Woman, Life, Freedom movement.
