Answer to History

Answer to History is the final work of Mohammad Reza Shah Pahlavi — a book he completed in exile during the last months of his life, racing against illness and time. Written first in French as Réponse à l'histoire and published in 1980 shortly before his death in Cairo, it is not a detached history but the last Shah of Iran's personal testament and defense before the judgment of history.

In it the Shah reviews the record of his thirty-seven-year reign: the reforms of the White Revolution, his drive to modernize and industrialize Iran, oil policy, Iran's regional standing, and his strained relationship with the Western powers. He argues that the fall of the monarchy owed less to genuine popular discontent than to the missteps of Western foreign policy and great-power maneuvering, and sets out his own account of why the throne collapsed.
