King of the World: The Life of Cyrus the Great

King of the World: The Life of Cyrus the Great by Matt Waters, published by Oxford University Press in 2022, is the first full scholarly English-language biography devoted to the founder of the Achaemenid Empire. Waters sets out to recover the historical Cyrus from the tangle of Greek, Babylonian, and biblical traditions, drawing a careful line between the Cyrus of history and the Cyrus of legend.

Matt Waters is Professor of Classics and Ancient History at the University of Wisconsin–Eau Claire and a recognized authority on Achaemenid history. He is also the author of Ancient Persia: A Concise History of the Achaemenid Empire, and here he brings his command of cuneiform and classical sources to a readable narrative of Cyrus’s life.

The book traces how Cyrus rose from a minor ruler of Anshan to become the architect of history’s first world empire, absorbing Media, Lydia, and Babylon in turn and establishing a model of rule grounded in tolerance toward diverse peoples and faiths.
