Navid Afkari, an Iranian wrestling champion, was executed on September 12, 2020 in Adelabad Prison in Shiraz on false charges. He was arrested during the 2018 protests and despite worldwide appeals including from the International Olympic Committee President, the execution was carried out. Navid became a symbol of Iranian athletes' resistance against tyranny.
Today is 22 Shahrivar in the Shahanshahi calendar — one day in thousands of years of unbroken Persian culture.
